Our First Write@UNO Workshop!
Sarah DeBacher | October 21, 2014
Our first Write@UNO workshop of the year was a huge success! We hosted fifteen young writers from schools around New Orleans for a day of tutoring and craft classes. Andy Young hosted our poetry class, in which students were asked to write praise poems in the style of Kevin Young’s “Ode to the Hotel Near the Children’s Hospital,” praising the beauty that surrounds even our darkest moments. Students found the good in topics ranging from breaking an ankle to getting a bad grade and came up with some truly stunning poetry.
Novelist Bill Loehfelm hosted our fiction workshop. His class, in which students worked on character development using traits of people they already knew, was a favorite among attendees.
And of course, UNO’s MFA students generously volunteered as tutors, providing one-on-one support for attendees. While some students brought drafts of creative work for the tutors to look at, others worked with tutors to generate new work. We all had a great time, and students enjoyed the opportunity to work creatively in a no-pressure environment.
If you missed the workshop, never fear! The next Write@UNO workshop will be held Saturday, November 15. Details are on the GNOWP homepage. It’s the last workshop of the year, and we hope to see even more enthusiastic young writers this time!
